Joan Stong, LMSW, CASAC, Psychotherapist

Joan Stong, LMSW, CASAC is a Licensed Master Social Worker and Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor. Joan utilizes her years of experience in co-occurring mental health and addiction treatment providing therapy to children, adolescents, adults and their families in individual, family, and group therapy. A highly skilled therapist, Joan is known for her engaging personality and caring demeanor. She has worked in many areas of the behavioral health field giving her the unique ability to work and connect with individuals, couples, and families of all ages, backgrounds and life experiences.

Joan has worked extensively with mental health and substance use disorders, behavioral and emotional disturbances, trauma, family conflict mediation and resolution, stress management, work-related pressures and the LGTBQ community.  One of Joan’s specialties is working with individuals with substance use disorders and their families, recognizing the impact that addiction has on the entire family dynamic.  She is the facilitator for New Hope Rising’s Families Rising Group, a free weekly group that provides support and education for those coping with a loved one’s addiction. 

Additionally, Joan has a strong focus area of working with couples and family dynamics. Her clinical emphasis is on successful navigation of life transitions, changed circumstances and relationships. When working with children and teens, Joan strategically uses effective therapeutic interventions to help her clients process difficult emotions and behaviors when they don’t have the ability to verbally express their thoughts and feelings. 

Joan encompasses a strength-based, person-centered approach in her practice as a therapist and has a passion for empowering individuals to address systemic and interpersonal issues. Joan pulls from a variety of treatment modalities to meet the specific needs of the individuals and families she works with. She enjoys taking a holistic approach, incorporating mindfulness practices. She believes in providing psycho-education and ample support to the family system as a whole.

Joan feels truly privileged to witness her clients create long lasting changes. No matter the age or circumstance of her clients, Joan creates space for an authentic therapeutic connection that leads to positive change and growth.

In addition to her clinical work, Joan is an adjunct faculty member at the School of Social Welfare at Stony Brook University teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses. Joan Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Integrated Health, Health Policy and Social and Political Advocacy. She is dedicated to teaching the next generation of mental health professionals.
